Since 1862
Since 1862, we have strived to create unique experiences for mountain enthusiasts around the world. Evolving from a humble rope manufacturer to a leading global brand, we are dedicated to creating equipment that enables all individuals to push their limits in the outdoors.
A lot has changed in 160 years, but our commitment to safety and innovation with durable products that merge functionality and performance is unwavering. Mammut: always there since 1862.
Our company history
Our roots go back to a family business started in 1862 by Kaspar Tanner. In a small town in the north of Switzerland - just a stone’s throw from our current headquarters - Tanner’s team produced our first ropes, designed primarily for agriculture.
In the 1950s we launched our very first glacier rope. Made from nylon yarn, the rope proved to be a milestone for alpine safety. From 1952 the company began trading under the name Mammut and our focus shifted to ropes made specifically for mountaineering and sailing.
Our first avalanche transceiver came to life in 1969 with the development of the Barryvox VS 86 for the Swiss Army, starting Mammut’s long history with avalanche equipment.
By the 1980s, Mammut’s range had expanded into the hardware, apparel and footwear markets, establishing our holistic approach to mountain sports equipment.
In 1995 the Eiger Extreme collection is introduced for high alpine pursuits. Mammut athletes are heavily involved in the development process to ensure elite mountaineering needs are met. Generation after generation, the Eiger Extreme series redefined the standard for alpine apparel and equipment with a cutting-edge dedication to the ethos that form follows function.
In 2003, the company is renamed Mammut Sports Group AG, as it is known today. In the early 2000s, we also acquired Norwegian sleeping bag manufacturer, Ajungilak, and mountain boot specialist, Raichle.
2006 we advanced our commitment to environmental and social responsibility, improving materials and working conditions, plus developing our first climate strategy.
In 2022, we celebrated our 160th anniversary. We seek to create a legacy that will allow future generations to experience the spirit of adventure we enjoy today.
Nowadays Mammut operates in over 35 countries, employing over 850 outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.
