Sleeping bags
When it comes to washing, a 'less is more' approach helps ensure the longevity of your sleeping bag. Reserve full washes for when your bag is really dirty. You can always wipe clean in between.
When the time for a proper wash has come, you will need a washing machine with a large enough capacity. Avoid top-loading machines with an agitator. Having your bag professionally laundered (but not dry cleaned) is also a great option if you do not have the right machine.
Check the tag for the ideal washing temperature (generally 30°C/85°F). Using a small amount of gentle, non-detergent soap for down and synthetic-fill products, machine wash with a gentle cycle. Running an additional rinse cycle is recommended. Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or alternative bleach products.
Tumble dry low. High heat can melt the fabric and/or (synthetic) fill.
For down sleeping bags, add two or three clean tennis balls into the dryer when your bag is almost dry. This will help break down clumps and restore loft.
Ensure your bag is fully dry before storing. We suggest hanging it upside-down overnight after removing it from the dryer.
The durable water repellent (DWR) treatment that protects your gear from light rain is reactivated in the dryer, but it will eventually wear off over time. Test your sleeping bag by dripping a bit of water onto the surface. If it rolls off, you're good to go. If not, it's time for a refresh. We recommend using an eco-friendly textile impregation spray, which you can find at your local outdoor retailer. Follow the instructions on your spray of choice for best results.
Consider these tips and best practices to keep your sleeping bag in action longer:
- Help keep it clean by sleeping in clean clothes and using a liner.
- Protect it from the ground with a mat or tarp. Do not expose it to continuous rain.
- Air out your sleeping bag after each use. Did you know the average human releases at least 1/3L of moisture each night?
- On that note, be picky about who you lend it to.
- When not in use, keep your sleeping bag in the storage bag or another airy (e.g. cotton) and spacious cover. The compression bag is only intended for use on the go for easy packing.
