Jakob Schubert's Perfect Year

Austrian climbing pro Jakob Schubert was one of the absolute top favorites at the last Olympics in Paris. No wonder, as he experienced a year that has gone down in the annals of climbing sport. Last December, he crowned his sensational year with the ascent of Alphane, a 9a bouldering route in Chironico (Ticino, Switzerland) and set a new milestone: Jakob became the first athlete to climb both a 9a boulder and a 9c route within one year. These are currently the most difficult grades in both disciplines.

A year full of success

Jakob Schubert not only won two 2023 world championship titles and qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games, but also climbed the 9c sport climbing route B.I.G. for the first time. Rewatch his ascent here ↗
Shortly before the end of the year, he then succeeded in repeating the 9a Alphane bouldering route. “I gave myself the perfect Christmas present with the ascent of Alphane,” says Jakob.

Alphane (9a, bouldering): A rollercoaster of emotions

The path to the ascent of Alphane was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Schubert describes the challenge as a story of perseverance, characterized by inconsistent progress, setbacks, and the fight against poor conditions. “I am grateful that climbing offers me such experiences,” says Schubert.

The pinnacle of difficulty in bouldering and sport climbing

Jakob crowns his outstanding climbing year with the ascent of Alphane. Never before has an athlete mastered the highest levels of difficulty in bouldering and sport climbing in one year. There were just three months between the first ascent of B.I.G. (9c) and the ascent of Alphane (9A).

Highlights of Jakob’s climbing year 2023

Jakob's consistency and versatility in climbing are impressive. In addition to his successes on the crag, he has also excelled in competition. With a double victory at the World Championships in Bern and early qualification for the Olympics, he has achieved his competition goals and successfully completed his most important projects at the same time.

January: Ascent of Trip to the Moon (8B/B+), Boogalagga (8B), the Shelter (8B), and Flash from Second Life (8A), as well as Life Goes On (8A+/8B)

March: Second place at the Studio Bloc Masters in Darmstadt

June: Bronze medal in lead at the home World Cup in Innsbruck

July: Gold medal in the Lead World Cup in Villars

August: Gold medal in Lead and in the combined Boulder & Lead format at the World Championships in Bern

September: First ascent of B.I.G. (9c) in Flatanger

October: Victory at the Austrian Lead & Combined Championships and repeating the Tyrolean classic Qui (9a+)

December: Repetition of Clash of the Titans (9b) and ascent of Alphane (9A) in Chironico
